Design Technology Careers
WHAT ARE THE PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS NECESSARY FOR A CAREER
IN DESIGN TECHNOLOGY?
Design technicians should enjoy drawing and be able to visualize what
they are drawing. They should have some artistic ability, be willing
to work and learn, be neat and accurate in their work, and if they are
in design work, it is essential that they be mechanically minded. Students
who are entering the Las Positas College A.S. degree program in Design
Technology should be proficient in algebra and will find two years of
high school mechanical drawing helpful. Good English skills and some
background in physical science are also helpful.
WHAT
ARE THE WORKING CONDITIONS AND SALARY?
The majority of design technology personnel in the country work for
manufacturing companies, architectural and consulting firms, construction
companies, mapping companies and public utilities. Others are employed
in highway and public works departments as well as in the armed forces.
Work environments are generally good although drafting technicians often
sit for long periods of time doing very detailed work.
WHAT IS THE EMPLOYMENT OUTLOOK?
Employment opportunities are expected to increase faster than average
for all occupations, especially for those with an A.S. degree. Design
technicians may advance to senior draftsmen, technical illustrators,
designers and/or supervisors. Design technology as a career offers an
excellent outlet for creative ability and personal satisfaction from
seeing one's ideas materialize.
