Yoga, exercise with relaxation. This course will give you the opportunity to experience a most unique exercise system. You will learn a variety of different poses, and series of stretches. The exercises will help promote strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination in a calm and quiet atmosphere. Relaxation techniques and controlled breathing patterns are also important elements of this exercise system. You will learn to breath deeply, smoothly, and slowly. It may seem awkward at first, but with time, it becomes effortless.
Loose-fitting clothing is the ideal attire for yoga. Any tight clothing will restrict your movements and be uncomfortable. It is also recommended that a towel or blanket be brought to class. It can be used to sit or lie on while exercising; and during the relaxation sessions, because your body may cool off, a light covering helps to break the chill. This class only meets for two hours a week. The grading for this class is based on attendance and participation. Accumulated absences and tardies will affect your final grade. There is a "Credit/No Credit" option. All the exercises will be presented by means of explanation and demonstration. It is important that you be attentive and courteous. Once class starts, no one speaks except the instructor. To get the most benefit from the exercises, you must be able to concentrate and focus on your body and your movements. No disruption of any kind will be tolerated. Please "Don't come late, and Don't leave early."
Seek the calm and serenity of 'quiet time.' This seemingly nebulous concept is more a quality of time than any actual length of time. It is the focus of your thoughts to anything other than your immediate surroundings. In a busy office setting, just closing your eyes, visualizing a beautiful sunset, and taking a deep breath can create a soothing calm. Doesn't hurt to try it. |
